![]() UnderlandOpening in June 2010
In this new exhibit planned for The Children’s Garden, children will crawl through “underground” tunnels and around tree roots to discover a rabbit warren and a hibernating bear, uncover buried treasure troves of shells and rocks, and find evidence of insects busy beneath the ground. Artist-created animal sculptures and whirling “sand flowers” will add to the intrigue. Fun, surprising and challenging, Underland will encourage exploration, discovery and a deep appreciation of the natural world. The ClimberOpening in June 2010Designed by acclaimed architects and artists Tom and Spencer Luckey, this artfully designed, one-of-a-kind climbing structure in The Children’s Garden will become a signature regional outdoor destination. Children will climb, squirm and stretch through an enclosed undulating maze of interconnected platforms on varying levels and gaze down at the capital city from new heights. A dramatic work of public art and a safe and exciting climbing adventure, the Climber will encourage children to get outside and play! Play Power
Opened October 2008This new learning environment celebrates the power of play, engaging kids and grown-ups in open-ended creative activities that vividly illustrate the benefits of self-directed play. Visitors investigate cause and effect with sound, motion, magnets, air and light. They construct crazy contraptions that send balls rolling down ramps and through mazes, create original musical compositions on the huge pipe organ, and transform an intriguing domed play space with colorful geometric building blocks. A resource nook encourages parents and caregivers to notice and reflect on the importance of play in their children’s lives. About
